Hi Lengo,
DirectX9 contains everything available in DirectX 7 or DirectX 8, as well as additional DirectX 9 functionality.
All DirectX7 or DirectX8 applications should run normally on a DirectX 9 pc.
Does the version really matter? It depends on what you currently have available.
BCB does not work well with the DirectX / Visual C++ style of programming, so we created the TDx_Library to make DirectX work in BCB as if DirectX were an integrated part of BCB programming.
Without the TDx_Library, DirectX programming is still painful using BCB.
With the TDx_Library, DirectX programm with BCB is easy.
It boils down to what is available now, which is BCB + DirectX 7.
DirectX 7 is older, but still contains an enormous amount of untapped functionality, especially with BCB.
And we are working on a DirectX 9 version of the TDx_Library.
Which compiler is best? We think Borland C++ Builder is the best compiler, mostly because it is truly visual programming.
The only thing that lets BCB down is the fact that you cannot program DirectX very easily - without our components.
Add our TDx_Library to BCB, and you have truly visual Rapid Application Development DirectX programming.
Can BCB do the job? Well, the demos kind of prove that the entire TDx_Library concept is possible.
The reason there are no books / etc. for programming BCB + DirectX is that it is relatively painful todo anything at all with BCB and DirectX without the TDx_Library.
Writing a complete game? I think so. Many an application has been created using BCB.
Hope this helps,
